Ellen G. White: The Holy Spirit brings conviction through nature that transcends logic

Friday, November 30th, 2007

“So through the creation we are to become acquainted with the Creator. The book of nature is a great lesson-book, which in connection with the Scriptures we are to use in teaching others of his character, and guiding lost sheep back to the fold of God. As the works of God are studied, the Holy Spirit flashes conviction into the mind. It is not the conviction that logical reasoning produces; but unless the mind has become too dark to know God, the eye too dim to see him, the ear too dull to hear his voice, a deeper meaning is grasped, and the sublime, spiritual truths of the written Word are impressed on the heart.” Ellen White, The Southern Work, November 3, 1908

Ellen White: God’s children called to live his character in this world

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

“This name is hallowed by the angels of heaven, by the inhabitants of unfallen worlds. When you pray, ‘Hallowed be Thy name,’ you ask that it may be hallowed in this world, hallowed in you. God has acknowledged you before men and angels as His child; pray that you may do no dishonor to the ‘worthy name by which ye are called.’ James 2:7. God sends you into the world as His representative. In every act of life you are to make manifest the name of God. This petition calls upon you to possess His character. You cannot hallow His name, you cannot represent Him to the world, unless in life and character you represent the very life and character of God. This you can do only through the acceptance of the grace and righteousness of Christ.” Ellen White, Thoughts from the Mount of Blessings, p. 107

Ellen G. White: Never give up on God’s mercy

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

“When in his distress Jacob laid hold of the Angel, and made supplication with tears, the heavenly Messenger, in order to try his faith, also reminded him of his sin, and endeavored to escape from him. But Jacob would not be turned away. He had learned that God is merciful, and he cast himself upon His mercy… until he prevailed.” Ellen White, Conflict and Courage, p. 68

Ellen White: God’s love revealed in battle between good and evil

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

“The history of the great conflict between good and evil, from the time it first began in heaven to the final overthrow of rebellion and the total eradication of sin, is also a demonstration of God’s unchanging love” Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33

Ellen White: God shapes the affairs of humanity with mercy

Monday, November 26th, 2007

“In the annals of human history, the growth of nations, the rise and fall of empires, appear as if dependent on the will and prowess of man; the shaping of events seems, to a great degree, to be determined by his power, ambition, or caprice. But in the word of God the curtain is drawn aside, and we behold, above, behind, and through all the play and counterplay of human interest and power and passions, the agencies of the all-merciful One, silently, patiently working out the counsels of His own will…” Ellen White, Conflict and Courage, p. 250

Satan: God is stern and harsh

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

“Satan led men to conceive of God as a being whose chief attribute is stern justice–one who is a severe judge, a harsh, exacting creditor. He pictured the Creator as a being who is watching with jealous eye to discern the errors and mistakes of men that He may visit judgments upon them. It was to remove this dark shadow, by revealing to the world the infinite love of God, that Jesus came to live among men.” Ellen White, Steps to Christ, p. 11

Ellen White: Love is a divine principle seen in God and His children, alike

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

“Supreme love for God and unselfish love for one another–this is the best gift that our heavenly Father can bestow. This love is not an impulse, but a divine principle, a permanent power. The unconsecrated heart cannot originate or produce it. Only in the heart where Jesus reigns is it found. “We love Him, because He first loved us.” In the heart renewed by divine grace, love is the ruling principle of action. It modifies the character, governs the impulses, controls the passions, and ennobles the affections. This love cherished in the soul, sweetens the life and sheds a refining influence on all around.” Ellen White, Acts of the Apostles, p. 551

Ellen White: God is light; His people are to be light

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

“All the light of the past, all the light which shines in the present and reaches forth into the future, as revealed in the Word of God, is for every soul who will receive it. The glory of this light, which is the very glory of the character of Christ, is to be manifested in the individual Christian, in the family, in the church, in the ministry of the Word, and in every institution established by God’s people. All these the Lord designs shall be symbols of what can be done for the world. They are to be types of the saving power of the truths of the gospel. . By beholding the goodness, the mercy, the justice, and the love of God revealed in the church, the world is to have a representation of His character. It is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings;and never before was its diligent study so important as now.” Ellen White, God’s Amazing Grace, p. 229

Ellen White: God is not the author of any type of darkness

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

“God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If there were no light there would be no shade. But while the shade comes by the sun, it is not created by it. It is some obstruction that causes the shadow. So darkness emanates not from God, but is the result of an intruding object between the soul and God…. Disregard of the light that God has given brings the sure result. It creates a shadow, a darkness that is more dark because of the light which has been sent… If a man withdraws himself from light and evidence, and yields to Satan’s seducing arts, he himself draws the curtain of unbelief about him, so that light cannot be distinguished from darkness. More light and evidence would only be misunderstood by him. The greater the evidence, the greater will be the indifference. This will lead the deceived soul to call darkness light and truth error.” Ellen White, Our High Calling, p. 26

Ellen White: God longs for his Divine character to shine in us.

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

“Those who are waiting to behold a magical change in their characters, without a determined effort on their part, will be disappointed. With our limited powers we are to be as holy in our sphere as God is holy in His sphere. To the extent of our ability we are to make manifest the truth and love and excellence of the divine character, and for this reason we must draw from the living fountain.” Ellen White, Review & Herald, Nov. 1, 1892 [emphasis supplied]
