Ellen White: Returning good for evil identifies us as children of God

Friday, March 28th, 2008

“The children of God are those who are partakers of His nature. It is not earthly rank, nor birth, nor nationality, nor religious privilege, which proves that we are members of the family of God; it is love, a love that embraces all humanity. Even sinners whose hearts are not utterly closed to God’s Spirit will respond to kindness; while they may give hate for hate, they will also give love for love. But it is only the Spirit of God that gives love for hatred. To be kind to the unthankful and to the evil, to do good hoping for nothing again, is the insignia of the royalty of heaven, the sure token by which the children of the Highest reveal their high estate.”  Ellen White, Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 75

Ellen White: God commissions us to reveal His character

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

“God has enjoined the duty upon His human agents to communicate the character of God, testifying to His grace, His wisdom, and His benevolence, by manifesting His refined, tender, merciful love…” Ellen White, God’s Amazing Grace, p. 229

Ellen White on “The Lord Our Righteousness”

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Christ is called ‘the Lord our righteousness,’ and through faith each one should say, ‘The Lord my “righteousness.”‘ When faith lays hold upon this gift of God, the praise of God will be upon our lips, and we shall be able to say to others, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world’ (John 1:29). We shall then be able to tell the lost concerning the plan of salvation, that while the world was lying under the curse of sin, the Lord presented terms of mercy to the fallen and hopeless sinner, and revealed the value and meaning of His grace. Grace is unmerited favor. . . . It was grace that sent our Saviour to seek us as wanderers and bring us back to the fold.”  Ellen White, God’s Amazing Grace, p. 183

Ellen White: Thinking our own merits can save us alienates us from the blessings of grace

Friday, February 15th, 2008

“We must learn in the school of Christ. Nothing but His righteousness can entitle us to one of the blessings of the covenant of grace. We have long desired and tried to obtain these blessings, but have not received them because we have cherished the idea that we could do something to make ourselves worthy of them. We have not looked away from ourselves, believing that Jesus is a living Saviour. We must not think that our own grace and merits will save us; the grace of Christ is our only hope of salvation. Through His prophet the Lord promises, ‘Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon’ (Isa. 55:7). We must believe the naked promise, and not accept feeling for faith. When we trust God fully, when we rely upon the merits of Jesus as a sin-pardoning Saviour, we shall receive all the help that we can desire.”  Ellen White, Selected Message, vol. 1, p. 351

Ellen White: God gives grace hoping we’ll want more

Friday, December 21st, 2007

“It is no real evidence that you are a Christian because your  emotion is stirred, your spirit stirred by truth. The question is, Are you growing up into Christ, your living head? Is the grace of Christ  manifested in your life? God gives His grace to men, that they may desire more of His grace. God’s grace is ever working upon the human heart, and when it is received, the evidence of its reception will appear in the life and character of its recipient, for spiritual life will be seen developing from within. The grace of Christ in the heart will always promote spiritual life, and spiritual advancement will be made. We each need a personal Saviour or we shall perish in our sins.” Ellen White, That I May Know Him, p. 163
